PUZZLE 002 [ROUTE 30 - VIDEO/ACTION]

[[In order to ensure she catches up to the Professor and co. as soon as possible, Emmy has taken to travelling at night. This has usually failed to present any real issues, but tonight, as she heads to the route just outside Cherrygrove, she finds something that....well.

If you've currently got your pokegear video feed running, you'll probably hear the shriek.]]

Nonononono get away get away!!

[[It's a Spinarak! Which is unfortunate for Emmy, as she happens to be quite arachnophobic. The Pokemon doesn't quite seem to realise that her screaming isn't an invitation to come closer, as it happily starts to approach her to say hello-]]

NO!!

[[....before promptly getting kicked in the face.]]

A-ah....

[[Wild Spinarak fainted! Emmy...didn't...really gain anything, um.

...someone informing her that this...isn't quite the correct way to battle a wild pokemon would be appreciated.]]

[ Okay, sorry, he really has to laugh at this. Not in a making-fun kind of way, but more in a, how-cute! kind of way... and he really did try to move it off-screen, but uh... that didn't quite happen. ]

I take it that's not a good thing?

Are any of your pokemon this troublesome, Maes?

[ Before he can answer, have a little Eevee happily jumping up to the windowsill behind him and then flopping on his shoulder. She sticks her face in the 'Gear for a moment. ]

Haha, I wouldn't say I've had to deal with any troublesome ones yet!

Wow, it's adorable! I wonder how many different types of Pokemon there are out there? In all honesty, I'm a little concerned; a friend of mine told me that I need to train mine up so they can fight these 'Gym Leaders', but....well, I hope they don't have really big creepy ones, or something!

[ Well... you have that weirdly muscular Pokemon over there... that counts for something?

Also, Eevee is just going to wag her tail and smile at you, because she likes being called adorable. ]

I've heard the first Gym Leader uses only Pokemon that fly. That doesn't sound like there's anything creepy about that.

[ He's done his research. Even though he hasn't actually challenged any gyms. ]

I don't know; there are plenty of creepy things with wings! But I suppose I should be a little more optimistic.

[[She'll just pat said muscular Pokemon on the head, while the spider makes itself comfortable in her hair.]]

I don't suppose you know much about this whole thing? With the Gym Leaders and Elite Four, and all that?

Only what I've heard from others and scavenged from books.

It seems that each Gym Leader utilizes one specific type of Pokemon. The first you'll encounter, for example, uses only those that fly.

And they tend to get harder to defeat as you travel. So it does become quite the challenge!

One...specific type each. Got it! Well, we'll just have to work out an anti-airpokemon strategy, won't we Machi? It'll be a great puzzle!

[ Where, exactly... hmm... it's a lot slower traveling with other people. ] I believe we're on Route 30. Nearing Route 31, if I remember this path correctly! What about you?

[ You'll probably spot a derpy over-sized goth before you'd spot Maes, honestly... but uh... how could he word that in a friendly way? ]

I definitely will! I'm traveling with two others and we're [ really funny looking ] hard to miss! Perhaps we'll even bump into each other in the next city, if you're planning on taking the challenge!

Oh I definitely am! I couldn't possibly ignore the chance to investigate such an intriguing mystery!

I'd like that! Tell you what, how about you let me know when you get to Violet City? I'd like to hear how you did against the gym leader.

[ A slight pause here, 'cause he hadn't planned on taking on any gym leaders, honestly. But, have a smile. ]

Oh, you're not intending to battle the one in Violet City?

[[Come to think of it, that Eevee doesn't....look like much of a fighter...]]

[ Yeah, no... she really doesn't... though, he did get that random level 70 the other day, so... but Maes isn't someone who'd do that...

He'll just fondly pat his Eevee. ]

I'm not much of a fighter, really!

[ ooc: also, hah, I just realized I derped out really hard a few comments back when I said that Eevee jumped on a windowsill. Cause they're... out in the woods. >_> We'll just pretend windowsill = tree branch...? ffff... ]

That's perfectly understandable! I haven't been in one of these 'Pokemon Battles' yet, so I hope they won't be too violent. Either way, we'll be ready!

[ No! Nothing like that! ]

I haven't battled a Gym Leader, myself, but, the battles I've been in haven't been violent at all. [ Though... to be honest, all he's battled have been a little girl who was pretty set on nobody getting hurt, and a bunch of wild Pokemon... ] You 'win' by knocking out the other opponent's Pokemon~!

[ So there's no death and shouldn't be any blood or anything. If there is... you're doing it horribly wrong. ]

You only have to knock them out? Why, that's easy! It'll be a piece of cake!

[[SHE'S WELL VERSED IN THE WAYS OF KNOCKING PEOPLE OUT, SO]]

We should start training right now! Although I don't know if my spide-my Spinarak will be any good at martial arts.

[[Not that she isn't willing to try and teach it! It will be...quite the puzzle orz]]

[ ... He probably should've said your Pokemon knocks the opponent's Pokemon out. IF YOU KICK THE GYM LEADER'S POKEMON, YOU DON'T GET A BADGE, OKAY? ]

It's probably got a lot of useful non-martial arts attacks! This one, for example, [ Pointing to the Eevee that's still plopped on his shoulder ] knows how to kick sand into her opponent's eye to momentarily blind them.

[ His Magikarp knows how to splash around, too... it's pretty cool. ... Okay, it's made of complete fail. ]

Just treat it like a puzzle! [ Wherever did he get the impression that you like those? ] If your Pokemon aren't physically built to win through brute force, there are other ways of attacking and defending as well.

[[OH COME ON THAT DOESN'T SOUND FAIR!

Wait, you mean....they can fight in ways other than just physically attacking an opponent?

I'm going to have my work cut out for me to solve this puzzle!

Do you know if there's a library in Violet City where I could borrow some books on Pokemon? I clearly need to do some serious research!

[ THINK OF IT AS A MASSIVE PUZZLE ]

Yes! I believe only those of the 'fighting' type really specialize in physical attacks. But there are many other types! Like, Pokemon that can spit out large balls of flame, or even ones that can teleport from place to place!

[ Yeah. He's got a sick Magikarp already. If by 'sick' you mean 'missing a brain'. ]

I'm afraid I didn't get a chance to spend much time in Violet City the first time I passed through. But I'll let you know if I see one!
